The 'Stolen Generation' were actually generations of Aboriginal children taken away from their families by
governments, churches and welfare bodies to be brought up in institutions or
fostered out to white families.
Children taken by State and Territory authorities were not permitted to have any visits from their parents or families, such was the extent to which the separation from family, community and culture was enforced. Most Aboriginal families and communities in Australia were affected in some way by these policies of forcible removal – not only those who were taken away, but the parents, sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, and the whole communities themselves. |
